How We Rate Online Casinos
Every rating is earned through real-money testing, not guesswork.
Our Rating Process
Every casino that appears on MoneySmart STL has been personally tested by our lead analyst, Mark Stafford. We do not rate casinos based on marketing materials, press releases, or what other review sites say. We rate them based on what happens when we deposit real money, play real games, and try to withdraw real winnings.
The process is the same for every casino, every time. No shortcuts, no exceptions. This consistency is what makes our ratings reliable. A casino cannot game our system because the system is simple: perform well when tested, or receive a lower score.
The Testing Process: Step by Step
Step 1: Registration and Identity Verification
We create a new account at the casino using accurate personal information. We note how long KYC (Know Your Customer) verification takes, what documents are required, and whether the process is smooth or frustrating. Casinos that make verification unnecessarily difficult or slow lose points before we even make a deposit.
Step 2: Real Money Deposit
We deposit our own funds, typically between $100 and $500, using multiple payment methods. We test at least one cryptocurrency option (usually Bitcoin) and one traditional method (credit card or bank transfer). We record the deposit speed, any fees charged, and whether the minimum deposit amounts match what the casino advertises.
Step 3: Bonus Claim and Term Analysis
We claim the casino's welcome bonus offer and read the complete terms and conditions. This is where most casinos fall apart. We specifically check:
- Wagering requirements (how many times the bonus must be played through)
- Game contribution weights (whether slots count 100% but table games count 5%)
- Maximum cashout limits tied to the bonus
- Time limits for completing wagering requirements
- Restricted games that do not count toward playthrough
- Maximum bet limits while a bonus is active
Step 4: Game Play and Wagering Completion
We play through the full wagering requirements using a mix of slots and table games. This is not a token effort. We complete the entire rollover to determine whether the bonus is realistically clearable by an average player. We also evaluate game variety, software quality, loading speeds, and mobile performance during this phase.
Step 5: Withdrawal Request and Timing
Once we have completed the wagering requirements, we request a withdrawal. We submit cashout requests via both cryptocurrency and fiat methods, then record the exact time from request to funds arriving in our wallet or bank account. This is the single most important metric in our reviews. A casino can have great games and generous bonuses, but if it takes two weeks to pay you, none of that matters.
Step 6: License and Security Verification
We manually verify every regulatory seal and license claim the casino displays. This means clicking through to the regulator's official website to confirm the license number is valid and active. We also check for SSL encryption, responsible gambling tools, and data protection measures. A casino with a fake or expired license is immediately disqualified from our recommendations.
Step 7: Customer Support Evaluation
We contact customer support posing as a regular player with common questions about withdrawals, bonus terms, and account verification. We evaluate response time, accuracy of information provided, professionalism, and whether the agent actually resolves the issue or just reads from a script.
Rating Criteria
After completing our testing process, we score each casino across six criteria. Each criterion is weighted based on its importance to the player experience. The final score is a weighted average rounded to one decimal place.
Payout Speed
Weight: Highest Priority
How fast does the casino process and deliver your withdrawal? We time every cashout from request to receipt. Crypto payouts under 2 hours score highest. Fiat payouts under 48 hours are considered good. Any casino that takes more than 5 business days for a standard withdrawal receives a significantly reduced score. We also check for hidden "pending periods" where the casino holds your request before even starting to process it.
Game Selection
Weight: High
We evaluate the total number of games, the variety of game types (slots, table games, live dealer, specialty), and the quality of the software providers represented. A casino with 3,000 games from reputable providers like Pragmatic Play, Evolution, and Betsoft scores higher than one with 5,000 games from unknown studios. We also check whether popular titles actually load and play smoothly, since some casinos list games they do not actually offer in all regions.
Bonus Value
Weight: Medium-High
A $5,000 welcome bonus means nothing if the wagering requirements are 60x and the max cashout is $500. We evaluate bonuses based on their real-world value: what is the realistic expected return after completing the wagering requirements? Casinos with reasonable wagering (25x–35x), no max cashout limits, and fair game contribution weights score highest. We also consider ongoing promotions, reload bonuses, and loyalty programs.
Banking Options
Weight: Medium-High
We check which deposit and withdrawal methods are available, the minimum and maximum transaction limits, any fees charged by the casino, and whether the same methods are available for both deposits and withdrawals. Casinos that accept deposits via credit card but force withdrawals via bank wire score lower. We give preference to casinos that support multiple cryptocurrency options alongside traditional methods.
Customer Support
Weight: Medium
We test live chat, email, and any other support channels the casino offers. Response time matters, but accuracy matters more. A fast response that gives wrong information is worse than a slightly slower one that actually resolves the issue. We ask specific questions about bonus terms, withdrawal limits, and verification requirements to see if agents know their own casino's policies. 24/7 availability with English-speaking agents is the baseline expectation.
Mobile Experience
Weight: Medium
Most players access online casinos from their phones. We test the mobile experience on both iOS and Android devices, checking page load times, navigation usability, game performance, and whether the full banking functionality is available on mobile. A casino that works perfectly on desktop but breaks on mobile is not acceptable. We also note whether the casino offers a dedicated app or a responsive mobile site.
How Final Scores Work
Each casino receives a score from 1 to 10 in each of the six criteria above. These scores are combined into a weighted final rating, with payout speed carrying the most weight. We do not round up generously. A casino needs to perform well across all categories to earn a high overall score.
Our scores are not permanent. We re-test casinos periodically and update ratings when conditions change. A casino that was paying out within 24 hours six months ago might have slowed down to 5 days, and our rating will reflect that. Conversely, casinos that improve their service over time will see their scores updated accordingly.
We also maintain a blacklist of casinos that have demonstrated patterns of withholding legitimate withdrawals, using rigged software, or operating without any valid license. These casinos are never recommended on MoneySmart STL regardless of any other factors.
